Laying the career foundation

Training at SBV

Do you have a high school diploma or university entrance qualification, are you a strong communicator and would you like to work as a prospective property agent in a friendly and motivated team? Then apply to us!

We always start recruitment on 1 August each year. However, if you would like to apply for an apprenticeship, you should plan well in advance: we would like to receive your application one year before the apprenticeship starts.

All apprenticeship places for 2025 are filled.

We are already accepting applications for 2026.

Please use our application portal. You can find the link here.

Your application as an apprentice should include

  • a cover letter that tells us why you have chosen this profession and us as an employer
  • a CV (in tabular form)
  • Your school reports/work and internship certificates, if applicable

It's worth the effort: we give trainees practical insights into all areas of our company. You will get to know the work in the Accounting, Housing service, Business development and Architecture departments, as well as in our Savings, Membership and External management departments.

The six training blocks, each lasting five to six weeks, take place at the Bad Malente-Gremsmühlen vocational college.

Matthias Weiß will be happy to provide you with further information and answer any questions about training in our housing association by telephone.

You can get a first impression of the apprenticeshiphere.

Brief portraits of the training officers
The first point of contact

As SBV's official trainer, Matthias Weiß is the first point of contact for all trainees in the company - regardless of which department they are currently working in.

"After successfully passing their exams, our trainees have three doors open to them: they can stay with us if there is a vacancy. They can work as property agents in other companies or they can continue their qualification - for example with a degree course. My aim is to ensure that they are optimally prepared for all three paths at SBV."

At SBV, the trainees not only acquire specialist knowledge about the property industry, but also develop personally. Among other things, they learn how important it is to work well together and how effective it is to collaborate with others. These and other values are also part of the co-operative concept.

In addition to the trainer for the entire company, who is responsible for all overarching issues, each individual department has a training officer who helps with internal departmental issues.

From marketing to organisation

Matthias Weiß (*1980) has been part of the SBV team since 2013. He is head of the Marketing, social and organisational matters department. The things that the trainees learn from him are correspondingly varied - and not just in theory. "It's important to me that the young people also try things out in practice."

This includes trainees designing and implementing a small advertising campaign, providing support at events, experiencing direct contact with members at the switchboard and reception and creating press reviews. Each year group is also responsible for its own project.

Matthias Weiß started his career with an apprenticeship as a bank clerk. "That was very customer-orientated and technically sound." He then studied business administration and sports management, worked for SG Flensburg-Handewitt, among others, and completed a degree in property management by distance learning after joining SBV.

In addition to his management functions, Matthias Weiß is also SBV's official trainer.

"I want to build on the strengths of our trainees and work on the things that aren't going so well yet. In addition to the technical aspects, a sense of duty, reliability and initiative are particularly important to me."

Get to know as much as possible!

Nele Bethke (*1998) has been a division manager since January 2024 and is also the training officer for the Renting division. She trained at SBV herself. After successfully completing her final exams, she first took on a parental leave replacement and then moved deeper into the division in the New Construction and Project Development project position and as a stand-in in the Renting division.

In the Renting division, the trainees work closely with the team and the members from the outset. Among other things, they provide support when viewing applications for flats, draw up tenancy agreements, attend flat viewings and also have telephone contact with customers.

In her role as training supervisor, Nele Bethke has decided to pass on her own positive experiences: "I received a warm welcome in the individual departments and was allowed to get involved straight away." She helps them to settle in - also within the team - and then provides support.

"The trainees should learn and get to know as much as possible in order to get a good overview of the different tasks."

Sparring partner for trainees

Christopher Reichelt (*1991) has been with SBV since 2019. He has headed the Business Development department since 2020. In the area of project development, one of his tasks is to assess the current status of individual buildings from the portfolio and work with employees from other departments and external planners to find solutions to upcoming challenges. Trainees support this process, for example by coordinating deadlines and helping to check floor plans. In the area of quality management, they work in a team to develop ideas on how SBV's internal processes can be improved. "They can also contribute their experience from other departments here."

Welcoming, supporting, evaluating - this is how Christopher Reichelt sees his role as a training supervisor. He himself completed a dual study programme (business administration with banking) and graduated with a bachelor's degree in banking. Parallel to his time in the rental housing construction division at Investitionsbank SH, he completed a Master's degree in Real Estate Management.

"Having a direct contact person helped me a lot during my training. Not by taking everything off my hands, but as a sparring partner. I would like to pass this on to our trainees."

Basic knowledge for working life

Tanja Hensen (*1973) discovered her passion for HR management during her training as an administrative assistant. After gaining an additional degree in administrative management, she remained in the HR sector throughout her career, including at s:hz. She has been part of the SBV team since 2018 and has been working as an assistant to the Executive Board alongside her HR management duties since November 2019.

In the area of HR, the focus is on knowledge transfer: labour law, collective bargaining law, occupational health and safety, social security - a lot revolves around laws. But recruiting, applicant management and payroll accounting also play a major role. Among other things, the trainees recalculate their own payslips by hand, draw up an example of an employment contract and learn what can be read from a national insurance number. "There are lots of 'aha' effects." Tanja Hensen is still in contact with her own trainer today. "He believed in me and encouraged me."

"My aim is to impart knowledge that sticks and also helps the trainees in their everyday lives."

Very close to the members

Jessica Behrend (*1984) decided in favour of SBV during her training - and has stuck with it. She has been working in Property management since successfully completing her training. She took over as head of the department in 2014.

Property management is the interface between the resident members and all other departments at SBV. "As soon as the member has moved into their SBV flat, we in Property management are the first point of contact. We are very close to our members. Anyone who comes to us should like contact with people."

Trainees are given an overview of all tenant and property data and learn about the legal framework, e.g. in the case of modernisation measures. They also learn how to find a good solution for all parties involved in conflicts. "Communication is our top priority - with the members, but also with employees from other departments."

"I enjoy supporting the trainees. Promoting young talent is vital for us, especially in times of a shortage of skilled labour."

Co-operative principles

Michael Frank (*1974) joined SBV in 2011 when the savings organisation was founded and has been in charge of it from the outset. His department also includes membership, where the trainees learn about the basis and self-image of a co-operative: what does it mean to be a member of a co-operative and how is membership processed and managed by the co-operative? As a bonus, so to speak, they also gain an insight into banking through the in-house savings facility. Among other things, they learn how to set up contracts. In both areas, the focus is on good communication. "I've always been a customer person. Our trainees also get to try their hand at talking to customers - with support, of course."

Michael Frank trained as a bank clerk, then completed his qualifications as a savings bank specialist and savings bank business administrator while working and, with the change to SBV, also completed his training as a property clerk by distance learning.

"Supporting young people professionally, but also in their personal development, is a task that I deliberately and gladly chose."

Working at eye level

John Krieger (* 1976) has been working at SBV since 2010, the first eight years in Property management. He has been Head of External Management since 2018 and has also taken on the role of Training Supervisor for the department. "We're a small team, we're all in the same room and work as equals." This also applies to the trainees.

In External Management, they go along to owners' meetings, flat handovers and tradesmen's appointments, among other things. They learn about condominium and tenancy law and draft their first letters.

John Krieger already knows the SBV from his school days. Back then, he worked in the gardening department. He then completed his apprenticeship at the municipal housing organisation Wohnungsbau Flensburg GmbH. "You suddenly have a lot more to do with other people during your apprenticeship and become a bit more mature yourself." After completing his training, he worked in the housing industry in Hamburg for ten years, completed his property management qualification on the side and then moved back to Flensburg with his family.

"The close relationship with the trainees is important to me. And that we - mutually! - give each other feedback."

The commercial control centre

Jörn Malter (*1975) is a qualified banker. He spent ten years looking after the corporate client business of a bank. SBV was one of his clients. In 2009, he switched to the housing industry. He completed his degree in property management while working. Jörn Malter has also been an accountant for the housing industry since 2012 and has been deputy head of the accounting department and training officer for the division since 2013.

"Accounting is the commercial control centre." So it's no surprise that it's all about figures and data. Among other things, the trainees enter invoices, create tables, enter data into the system and keep statistics. They gain insights into operating cost accounting, accounting for External management, property financing and preparing annual financial statements.

During his own training, Jörn Malter was assigned to the counter on his very first day. "That's when I realised: 'Now things are changing'. That was a big step."

"I want to arouse interest in this important area of the company - and also be the contact person if something doesn't run smoothly straight away."

Insights into technical practice

Brar Petersen (*1974) is a trained bricklayer and subsequently studied civil engineering. He has been working at SBV since 2006, where he is now head of the Maintenance and Modernisation division in the Architecture department.

A separate technical department - this is rather rare in training companies for property managers. At SBV, however, trainees have the opportunity to take a look at this area and familiarise themselves with technical practice in residential construction. Among other things, they learn which items need to be considered during modernisation and what prices are used in the calculations. They are allowed to inspect materials, pre-check invoices and take part in construction meetings.

Brar Petersen has fond memories of his own bricklaying training - "tough but nice". He has been working as a training officer for several years.

"I have three children myself and enjoy working with young people. When it suits, I also take our trainees out to one of the construction sites."
